Superman Returns This Summer

Superman Returns this summer, starting June 28. As a child, I read all the comics and always loved the superheroes, male and female. As I grew up, Superman became my favorite because he was the perfect gentleman. After he took Lois Lane on that flight across the night sky, I became a lifelong fan.

Tonight, I visited http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/supermanreturns/hd/
and viewed the movie trailers. I was excited to hear the same theme music and see that Lois gets a sky trip this time, too. View the clips and come back and tell me what you think.

MySpace to become monetized

Chris DeWolfe bought the domain MySpace.com in 2002, thinking that it might be useful someday. Today, MySpace is a social-networking community of 85+ million tweens, teens and college students. MySpace has a new owner, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. News Corp. bought MySpace and Intermix last year for $649 million. Now pressure is on Mr. DeWolfe to monetize MySpace.
News Corporation is assembling its overarching online unit, Fox Interactive Media. Run by Ross Levinsohn, the longtime manager of FoxSports.com, Fox Interactive Media is stitching together several Web properties into a big Internet company focused on youth. The top priority is MySpace.
One idea is to turn advertisers into members of the MySpace community, with their own profiles. Now, the young people who spend hours each day on MySpace can become friends with movies, cellphone companies and even deodorants.

Users will be able to link to the profiles set up for these advertisers, as they would to real friends. Then, these friends will be able to send them messages (advertising).

Somehow, I do not think this will work. Can you imagine the profiles?
Hi, my name is Deryk. I am 18 and keep my breath fresh with Vanilla Crest and control my flatulence with Gax-X. I am 6'2" when I am gelling with Dr. Scholl's.

My name is Lenara. My hair is Golden Honey #2 by Clairol, my eyes are Aquamarine by Accuview, and I am medium tan, thanks to BellaBronze.

Hello, Josh here. I love Axe deodarant, always depend on Lotrimin for my athlete's foot, and when I have that nasty jock itch, I break out the Tinactin.

Howdy, my name is TZ. I enjoy reading books I purchase at Amazon.com and receive all my DVDs from NetFlix. I use the American Express card so that I receive vacation miles with every purchase.

Hey! Candy here. I drive a car financed by proceeds from feminine hygiene advertising displayed prominently on my SUV. I eat wherever Mystery Shopper assigns me.
What do you think?

My Space, Your Space, Now Separate Space

The blogosphere is rife with reports of sexual predators using MySpace for locating their prey. Mounting pressure from parent groups, law enforcement, as well as its own community, is forcing MySpace to take measures to restrict adult and teen interaction -- without alienating its 85 million members.

At least one lawsuit against MySpace has been filed on behalf of minors, and in March, two men were arrested over sex charges after allegedly using the site to meet two girls under 14. MySpace responded to criticism earlier this year by appointing Hemanshu Nigam as chief security officer, and alerting members to the dangers of sexual predators with on-site ads.

Other new rules
  • adult members (18+) are prohibited from joining a group of 14- or 15-year-olds, unless they know the younger members' e-mail address or full name;
  • members may request not to be contacted by anyone outside of their age group;
  • all members may display either full or partial profiles, whereas previously the full profiles of anyone over 18 were available to all members.
MySpace has made progress in its effort to attract advertising. Walt Disney Pictures has contracted with MySpace to build buzz for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Pages designed for major advertisers, including several Pepsi-Cola beverage brands, are being championed as a safe approach to social-networking sponsorship.

If you are over the age of 18 and would like to explore a new community of educated, socially conscious bloggers, you may want to join Gather.com

In Case of Emergency (ICE) Could Save Your Life

This is a public service announcement about ICE. This story was orginally posted on CoolAdzine for Marketers in July of 2005. However, after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, with family members still searching for each other and bodies that have yet to be identified, the message bears repeating.

Mobile phone users are being urged to enter a number in their phone's memory with the acronym ICE, for In Case of Emergency, with a contact person's name and number.

Paramedics or police are able to find the number fast and reach a relative or friend who can help identify a deceased victim or to treat an injured one by providing vital personal information, including details of any medical condition.

CBS news story on ICE

The campaign was launched in May 2005, but had limited impact until the first series of London blasts. Those explosions rendered many victims unidentifiable, which sparked an e-mail campaign to spread the ICE idea around the world.

2006 Update: If you do not have a cell phone, you may still take advantage of ICE.

From the ICE web site:
Medical information held on our secure database can be used by paramedics or doctors to save your life. You can update it at any time. Give us up to three contact names and numbers, and give your loved ones peace of mind - we're on call for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

China Online

There are 111+ million Internet users in China. The China econoomy is rocketing, but online shopping in China is not. The use of credit cards is not widespread, so the simple act of paying for goods online is just one problem retailers must overcome.
There is no question that China represents a huge potential online market, but e-commerce is currently hamstrung on several fronts, ranging from a cash-centric society to geographic limitations for deliveries. Due to the country's lack of freedoms and censorship laws, there are also moral questions to be addressed.

Success Blog: ?! Confused !? - Information and More

?!Confused!? - Information and more is a blog based in China with news, information, tips and lots of fun. The blog has different public sections like News, Fun, Media, and Gallery. There are some private sections available if you register.

The blog posts are truly marvelous and give the visitor insight into the Chinese culture. View this one about arranged marriages. Here is a sampling of the post:
... China's first "love market", a meeting point between China's tradition of arranged marriage and the irresistible rise of consumer choice, even in the area of personal relationships. Here, parents come to exchange pictures and brief biographies of their children of marriageable age in the hope of finding the perfect partner for each, with the right qualifications, income and, almost as important, a compatible animal sign. "My son is a dragon. Is your daughter a rabbit? No?" The grey-haired woman shifts her eyes away from the couple to search the crowd around her. "Has anyone got a rabbit? I'm looking for a rabbit. Rabbit and dragon are a good match!"

The pictures range from cityscapes to seascapes to foolishness. All of the pictures are very understated, like the picture to the left. What is it?

Learn a little about the offbeat side to China: what the bloggers know and do. You will be surprised. Stop by and say Ni hao (nee-Ha-OW) to MoD (master of domain? mother of dogma? minister of data?) . Tell him/her that CyberCelt sent you.

BTW - the picture is a PC made into a BBQ pit. Ingenious use of resources. I may do the same thing to my computer next time it freezes up on me.

Online Safety for Children

While this topic is not about advertising or marketing, per se, I felt that it was very important to share

The Internet is a wonderland of free games, resoures, entertainment, and social networking for children. However, concerns for online safety should be at the forefront of any surfing. How do you find out which sites your children should use?

A great starting point is the American Library Association’s Great Websites for Kids. These sites are fun to visit and many of them are educational. They are easy to navigate, have clearly identified authoring sources, and make effective use of the Internet to create unique, interactive experiences.

Finding content on the Internet that is educational, entertaining, and appropriate for kids is one of the most important things a parent can do. GetNetWise has a web site with comprehensive resources for both parents and children.

Other Summer Safety Concerns: Cyberspace is not the only place bad people lurk. People in your neighborhood may be guilty of offenses that should concern you. The National Sex Offender Registry is a website that anyone may access to find out who is living next door or down the street. There are also services that you may pay to conduct background checks on your babysitter, daycare worker, nanny, housekeeper and yard man.

To you and your children's success this summer!

Please, no underwear, socks or ties this year

According to the National Retail Foundation 2006 Father's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, spending for Father's Day in 2006 is projected to be $9.0 billion, up from $8.2 billion in 2005.

When it comes to gifts for Dad, the average expenditure is projected to be $88.80, compared to $122.16 spent this year on Mother's Day gifts.

Almost 69 percent of consumers are expected to purchase at least a Father's Day greeting card.

Other gift ideas for Dad this year are:
  • Special meals or outings 38.1 percent
  • Clothing 32 percent
  • Gift certificates 27 percent
  • Books or CDs 22.3 percent
  • Electronics or computer-related accessories 15 percent
  • Tools or appliances 11.2 percent
  • Home improvement or gardening tools 10.9 percent
  • Sporting goods or leisure items 9.1 percent
Gift certificates are always a good gift and they fit nicely in a Father's Day card. Gift certificates are available from a variety of vendors, from Home Depot to Chili's Restaurant.

Do not fall into the "Well, we know he will use these" trap. Raise your right and and repeat after me: "We promise NOT to give dad underwear, socks or ties this year."

Success Blog ~ Winsome Gunning Art Walk

Winsome Gunning Art Walk paintingWinsome Gunning Art Walk is the Success Blog of the Week and is a blog about self-discovery and the artistic journey.

Winsome paints special moments: walks on a beach, planting flowers, a frangipani night, moon over the sea, birds flying in the sky, an orange tree, a moment of solitude and peace.

The painting pictured is Beach and Garden Detail. This painting spoke to my love of the sea and soothed my spirit with its simplicity. There is nothing I would add or take away.

Winsome writes: Simplicity is something I find a struggle. I know the times when my creativity has been clouded and difficult to access have been when I have moved away from simplicity in my life.

Please visit Winsome Gunning Art Walk to share her experiences as an artist and view her paintings. Tell her that CyberCelt sent you.
