Blog Your Blessing : Girl Friends are Forever

San Marcos River Rock
Time passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Jobs come and go.
Love waxes and wanes.
Men don't do what they're supposed to do.
Hearts break.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors.
Careers end.

~BUT~

Sisters are there, no matter how much time
and how many miles are between you.
A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her.
When you have to walk that lonesome valley and
you have to walk it by yourself,
the women in your life will be on the valley's rim,
cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you,
intervening on your behalf,
and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.
Sometimes, they will even break the rules
and walk beside you, or
come in and carry you out.

Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters,
daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, mothers,
grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins and
extended family all bless our life.
When we began this adventure called womanhood,
we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead,
nor did we know how much we would need each other.
Every day, we need each other still.

~Unknown~

Thank you, Suzanna, for being my friend. I love you!

WidSets Beta : Organize Your Spaces and Places

I would not know what a widget is if I had not been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century by, of all things, Blogger. However, now I like the drag and drop interface of widgets.

I like the simplicity of defining a space and assigning it a function, such as a place for links, feeds or pictures. I also like being able to edit these handy spaces, move them around the screen or delete them.

Widgets help us organize our universe. Now, WidSets is going to use a similar interface to help us organize our mobile experience. From the WidSets Beta site:
We are a small group of people with a long internet history and strong mobile background. . . We have also been using social networking services. . . and wanted to make these services available through a cell phone . . .
The widgets come in many languages and include games, email, news, comics and more. First, determine if your mobile device will support WidSets. Then download a WidSet or two from the library and try it out.

WidSets includes user forum and blog. If you are a developer, download a developer widget and write your own. This may be the future of the mobile web. I think I like it. What do you think?

Big Web Links Bid Directory

Big Web Links Directory is a new web directory offering a different approach to your website or blog listing. Most web directories sort listings by A-Z, by popularity or by page rank, but Big Web Links Directory allows you to bid on your listing.

If you want your listing to be on the first page of results for your category, you just increase the bid amount. The top 20 listings are shown on the top links page; but, if you bid your listing into the top 10, your listing will be shown on the homepage as well as the category listing page.

This is a brand new directory, so stop by Big Web Links Bid Directory, sponsor of this post, and bid your listing to the top.

It Is a War on Spam!

I hate SPAM. For every email address I have, I get at least 100 spam emails daily. A new survey conducted by Ipsos for the E-Mail Sender & Provider Coalition shows that I am not alone. Most email users in the USA use a variety of programs and tactics to fight spam. Over 80 percent of respondents said that they will report spam or unsubscribe from lists when spammed.

Eighty percent of respondents do not even open emails before deleting or reporting them as spam, instead 73 percent of email users scan the FROM field and 69 percent read the SUBJECT field to determine if they will open the email. Over 50 percent of respondents said that they were more likely to open emails that display a certified icon.

Virtual World a Better Place to Be?

The Virtual Worlds Conference hosted The Marketing in the Virtual World panel, moderated by Kellie Parker of PC World Magazine.

According to Shankar Gupta, (Beyond Second Life, Gaming Insider, 3/30/07)
. . . every major media company could do relatively easily: taking the settings of their popular properties and turning them into virtual worlds. Every viewer with a touch of fandom has imagined themselves as part of the world they enjoy so much . . .

Virtual worlds are complete with hackers and graffiti artists, too. I guess we will have to wait for the next life for a perfect world.

Go Local : Advertise Your Business Online

The other day, I was searching for the term, RV air conditioner. Google and Yahoo! returned at least ten pages of search engine results each. The only problem was that not one of the listings in the first page of these results were local to where I live. If I did not care about shipping charges, I could buy the RV air conditioner of my dreams from Indiana. If I wanted the thrill of bidding on an RV air conditioner, I could find at least three on eBay.

I finally found RV air conditioners at CampingWorld. Unfortunately, after I found the model for which I was searching, I had to locate a Camping World close to where I live. Then I had to call to see if they had the RV air conditioner I needed.

Just to determine if I was missing something, I went to an online yellow pages site and searched for RV air conditioner. I had several pages of results, and most of the businesses were local, but the air conditioners were not for recreational vehicles.

Why is a business in Indiana in my search engine results? Why are my search engine results not keyed to my IP address or my zip code? When I tried the local online Yellow Pages, I could not refine my search to the exact item for which I searched. Worse, many of the local listings did not have websites, so I was back to old-school-search, better known as calling for information.

Do not let this happen to your business. If you are thinking about where to place your small business advertising, make sure you are in the local search engine results for your zip code and your county and surrounding counties. Then, by all means, expand to the state, country, the world. That is what the Internet is all about. Just make sure you are not overlooking the customers in your own backyard first.

What is Hindering the Adoption of Mobile Technologies?

A new report by Media-Screen finds that, although more than 60 percent of U.S. broadband users currently own an Internet-enabled mobile device, only five percent of them, approximately five million, use the mobile Internet.

The study reports that the top mobile Internet activities are:

* Sending email 47 percent
* Playing games 27 percent
* Read the news 16 percent
* Watch TV programs percent

The report concludes that they are reluctant to partake in online mobile activities due to extra fees and difficulties establishing and maintaining Internet connections.

Sustainable Advertising Sounds Good to Me

Why it Matters : Donald Carli of the Institute for Sustainable Communication

This week the Why it Matters show talks about the carbon footprint of large advertising agencies and advertisers. This podcast explains how to become more carbon neutral and discusses the impact of carbon intensity on the stability or brand value of a publicly traded advertising agency holding company. Gain insights into how agencies, marketers and media companies may soon run afoul of their own carbon footprints.

I had no idea that the term, carbon footprint, was even used at a breakfast for the Advertising Production Club of New York.

Ad Age publishes its podcasts through iTunes. These podcasts (video or audio) are a regular part of their continuing news coverage. Ad Age Audio Reports contains the weekly content of the Why It Matters audio show.

Want a new car or truck?

We all would love to drive new cars. However, most of us replace our Used Cars with other used cars. It saves us time, money and all that angst when someone dings our door or backs into our bumper. We are hoping to replace our 20-year-old Ford van with a pickup truck that can tow a travel trailer. We have been looking at the Toyota Tacoma, but they are so expensive when new.

Enter LemonFree.com, sponsor of this post, a free automobile classifieds service with a built-in search technology to quickly locate used vehicles within a specific geographical area. There is a private messaging system built into the search interface, so you can ask questions of the seller while you are viewing the listing.

Are you selling a used car? You can complete your classifieds listing quickly and have it showing in the search results at LemonFree.com within minutes of verifying your email address. Upload up to 10 pictures of your vehicle and use as many words as you wish to describe the features. Even better, you can list your car for free until it sells on LemonFree.com.

Mobile Search Presents Many Challenges

We now use our mobile phones to download and listen to music, download and view video clips, take and send photographs, read and forward business documents... so what is the deal with mobile search? Mobile search should be evolving as handheld devices, including cell phones, become more sophisticated. Mobile search must return results with answers, not links.

Our preferences may be determined by device, subscriptions, past search history, location, demographics and search engine ranking algorithms. Within a streamlined search interface that may include shortcut keys, automatic completion of search terms, or even voice recognition systems to simplify the search experience, the results should be personalized and relevant.

No more clicks, no more surfing the WAP, as our mobile minutes run out like sands from an hour glass. Sounds good to you?

Help with addiction is just a call away

A few months ago, I was looking into drug and alcohol treatment facilities for a friend's child. I was at a loss in finding a program or even where to start. Finally, I called my therapist (from years ago) and, after we caught up with 15 years of history, I received some information on options in the small town in which we live. Mainly, her suggestion was to look to Austin or San Antonio for programs.

Today, I saw a drug rehabilitation program referral service called 1800NoDrugs.com. This is a non-profit agency that will refer you to a drug treatment center that meets your needs, free of charge. I like having this bookmarked in case the need arises again. 1-800-NoDrugs.com provides a service designed to help drug addicts, alcoholics, chronic relapse victims, and their families find effective drug rehab treatment and intervention for alcoholism and drug addiction treatment.

You may want to bookmark 1800NoDrugs.com, the sponsor of this post, or just jot down their telephone number: 1-800-NO-DRUGS (800-663-7847). If you have teenagers, you may want to visit the website. There are many resources on this site: articles, financing options, international contacts, and a contact form.

It never hurts to be prepared. Hope this helps someone.

Would You Repeat that Into My Pen, Please?

When was the last time you called customer service and actually talked with a human? Some customer service call routing systems do not give you the option to talk to anyone. If they do, just before you are transferred to the real human, you always hear the message, "This call may be recorded for quality control or for the purposes of training." What does this mean? Are they recording me so that I will keep my temper about calling 6 months in a row for the same problem? Maybe they hope I will violate some arcane telephone protocol and they will be able to justify handing me off to a supervisor?

Who listens to these recorded calls? I cannot think of anything more boring than listening to two people talk who know they are being recorded. But, what if you do not know you are being recorded? When I was younger, if you were being recorded, there was a tone every 30 seconds or so to let you know. No one could tape you without you knowing it.

Would you record a family member or your spouse if you thought you would discover something you needed to know? This is a thorny issue because you would be violating that person's privacy. Is there a time when this is considered necessary? Our government does it. Does that make it right?BrickHouse Security is a leader in the phone recorder market and also offers privacy products to detect and defeat call recording devices. Get a pen Phone Recorder. They are cool! So Bond, James Bond. If you need any type of spy-guy gadgets, you have to visit this website, BrickHouseSecurity.com, the sponsor of this post. They have everything to be covert, or is it overt?

Blog Your Blessing Sunday : Adversity Prayer

An Inuit Indian Prayer
Prayer at Time of Adversity
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think over again my small adventures.
My fears,
Those small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things
I had to get and reach.
And yet there is only one great thing,
The only thing,
To live to see the great day that dawns
And the light that fills the world.
Bloggers May Be the Future of Journalism
According to a recent We Media/Zogby Interactive poll, viewers are dissatisfied with traditional journalism and are becoming more dependent on bloggers and social networking sites to supplement their news.
A whopping 90 percent of respondents said that trustworthiness plays a large part in deciding the influence social networking sites and blogs over journalism, over one-half of respondents stated that internet-based media presents the greatest opportunity for the future of journalism, and 76 percent indicated that the Internet has a positive effect on the quality of journalism.
Items of interest included:
  • 55 percent claim to be dissatisfied with traditional news outlets;
  • 61 percent say traditional journalism is out of touch with what they want from news;
  • 86 percent believe bloggers will play an important part in the future of journalism;
  • 72 percent state that journalism is important to their community.
The leading news sources were websites (81 percent), television (78 percent), radio (73 percent), newspapers (69 percent) and magazines (38 percent).
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is my source for news and the writers are usually 90 percent accurate about what is going on in the world. It is a sad state of affairs when comedy TV is more reliable than FOX news network. What do you think about this? Can bloggers save journalism?
Protect Your Eyes with Polarized Sunglasses
When I was young, the only type of lens you could order in glasses was glass. Heavy and breakable, I wore them to protect my eyes. Today, you have a choice of materials of which your sunglass lens may be fashioned. Polycarbonate is virtually indestructible; thinner, lighter and stronger than glass. Polycarbonate naturally blocks about 98 percent of the harmful UV rays.
Trivex, originally developed for military applications, is stronger, clearer, and lighter than polycarbonate. Trivex minimizes distortion that occurs when objects are viewed away from the optical center. CR-39 plastic is most frequently used for lens in prescription eyeglasses, mainly because it is the least expensive. This material works fine for non-sports related activities. SR-91 plastic is the ideal lens material for sports glasses, goggles and masks. The optical clarity, scratch resistant properties and weight make it the clear choice for sunglasses! SR-91 lenses are polarized and they block 100 percent of UV rays.
Now that you know more about lens material, you should visit the ADS Eyewear website, sponsor of this post. ADS Eyewear is an optician owned and operated company specializing in sports-specific eye wear, such as sports sunglasses, motorcycle sunglasses, ski goggles, prescription sunglasses, and protective sports eye wear.
You can search the website by type of sport, like high speed sports (motorcycling and skiing), high energy sports (bicycling, running, golfing), water sports (swimming, boating, waterskiing), impact sports (soccer, racquetball, lacrosse), and other (driving, fashion, casual).
The website makes it easy to shop, search by manufacturer brand, type of sport or activity, and even gender of wearer. Search for motorcycle sunglasses, and you can limit the search to polarized, medium sized men’s motorcycle sunglasses.
Added value makes shopping made easy, too, with a free cleaning kit, free shipping with orders over $100 and VeriSign secure shopping. There is lots of information on the site, like the motorcycle sunglasses buyers guide and the ski goggles buyers guide.
Baseball, been verrry, verrry good to me
Door Number 3 handled all aspects of the campaign for The Texas Rangers baseball team. They l launched an outdoor, radio and TV campaign to boost its fan base.
Three TV ads each use the tag line, You Could Use Some Baseball, and demonstrate the unmanly activities in which men engage when it is not baseball season.
  • Candles features a young couple smelling candle scents.
  • Jousting shows a man looking for ways to bond with his son and failing miserably.
  • Talent Show is a parody of shows where viewers determine the fate of the contestants.
Billboards were erected throughout Dallas with messages such as Pop Fly is not a rap star and First base has nothing to do with kissing. Imaginative and funny, although it could be that marketers are misreading men. What do you think?
Blog Your Blessing Sunday : Prayer for Peace
This powerful prayer was said by 900 delegates at the Assembly of World Religions convened by the Patriarch of Moscow to coincide with the second United Nations Special Session on Disarmament.
This is probably the first time (and the last time) that members of leading religions have prayed together, with one prayer, a prayer for peace. Find the prayer for peace in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, Gaelic, German, Hebrew, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Welsh versions here.
Could there be a bankruptcy in your future?
No one wants to admit that their finances are out of control. We have all experienced more money going out than coming in.
In January of 1998, I quite my full-time job so that I could finish my college degree by August 1998. I had student loans and I knew that I was going to be working at least 20 hours a week for my internship during the summer, so I was not worried. I had everything planned.
By June I was in trouble. My savings were gone, I did not qualify for any more student loans, and my son was in private school. I started living on my credit cards. I had excellent credit, so I had $1000s in my line of credit on seven different cards.
By August, I was switching debt from one card to another, scared that if I missed a payment all the credit cards would start charging the regular rate and not the special offer rate that I always seem to find. I wanted to attend a credit counseling session, but I had just started a new job in Austin.
In the evenings, I would search the Internet for alternatives to bankruptcy. I followed the steps suggested, like calling my creditors and making a budget, but I could not consolidate my debt because I had just started a new job, and I certainly did not want to borrow any money from my family.
Lucky for me, an uncle died and left me a small inheritance. It was enough to repair my finances for a few years. I was lucky. Do not count on luck when it comes to finances.
