Stereotypical Purchasing for Christmas

A study from BIGresearch, commissioned by the National Retail Federation (NRF) to find out what parents are buying for their children this Christmas.

TMX Elmo is the top choice for boys and Barbie is the top choice for girls. This appears to be stereotypical and I wonder if we advertise to girls different than we advertise to boys? When does the difference begin? TMX Elmo is a gift that is liked by both boys and girls. Why do legos not appeal to girl children (or their parents)? Why are more iPods being purchased for girls than boys?
