Banking With a Conscience

The Co-operative Bank invests in financial products that are ethical, ecologically sustainable and morally accountable. They turn business away, £10m worth of business last year alone, that do not meet their ethical and sustainability policies.

The Co-op's financial products, including loans, are bound to their ethical policy, so customers know that the money they borrow does not come from companies that pollute the Earth or abuse human rights. In fact, the Co-operative Bank, sponsor of this post, is carbon positive, which means they are offsetting all of current carbon emissions plus an extra 10 percent to cover past emissions. Co-operative Bank was also the first bank in the UK to offer full-service Internet banking.

Their loan products include personal loans, flexible loans and career development loans. Here is a complete listing of their personal products:
  • Current Accounts
  • Credit Cards
  • Mortgages
  • Savings & Investments
  • Student Accounts
  • Accounts For Children
  • Car Insurance
  • Home Insurance
  • General Insurance
  • Life Assurance
  • Income and Health Insurance
  • CIS Pensions
  • Offshore Banking
  • Travel Services
  • Vehicle Rescue
Safe, sustainable, ethical -- banking with a conscience from Co-operative Bank.

There is a booming market in "responsible" banking/investing/services and Coop has always been a leader, no surprise given its heritage. Less well advertised is the fact that returns from "responsib;e" investment funds tend to be lower than the norm. No problem if the investor knows this upfront but too few do.

@adam-thanks for stopping by. I guess I would not mind a lower dividend if I know that somewhere native people are given fair trade, the Earth is being helped and there is no blood on the money.

I think it's great when big organisations like this take an interest in the environment and set an example to the rest of us. It makes a refreshing change. Just checking all the carnival links work Cybercelt.

Have been a customer with co-op for nearly 18 years and can't fault their service - have never had a problem with them, they don't seem to whack out charges like some of the other banks, and they make clear exactly what they do and why, as well as giving us customers some choice in where their 'giving' goes to. I have nothing but praise for the co-op, unlike other banks I have experience of. I think the ethos of being 'responsible' starts with the customer and works up through the system.

Great post, thanks - I came from the carnival too!
