Online Safety for Children

While this topic is not about advertising or marketing, per se, I felt that it was very important to share

The Internet is a wonderland of free games, resoures, entertainment, and social networking for children. However, concerns for online safety should be at the forefront of any surfing. How do you find out which sites your children should use?

A great starting point is the American Library Association’s Great Websites for Kids. These sites are fun to visit and many of them are educational. They are easy to navigate, have clearly identified authoring sources, and make effective use of the Internet to create unique, interactive experiences.

Finding content on the Internet that is educational, entertaining, and appropriate for kids is one of the most important things a parent can do. GetNetWise has a web site with comprehensive resources for both parents and children.

Other Summer Safety Concerns: Cyberspace is not the only place bad people lurk. People in your neighborhood may be guilty of offenses that should concern you. The National Sex Offender Registry is a website that anyone may access to find out who is living next door or down the street. There are also services that you may pay to conduct background checks on your babysitter, daycare worker, nanny, housekeeper and yard man.

To you and your children's success this summer!
